Fireweed Fall (Sadness)
In the natural world, death is no sad thing. Each death is only a re-ordering of cells and nutrients and effort. The young struggle to grow and strive and flourish, and are supported by the decay of those whose time has come.
Each autumn, I’m struck by the beauty of this cycle. The blue version of this print represents the sunny-sky hopes of autumn, while the grey version symbolizes the poignancy of renewal.
Fireweed Fall (Sadness) is a limited edition print entirely made by hand.
What is a hand-pulled linocut print?
After making an initial drawing, I hand-carve a linoleum block. I then squeeze ink out onto my palette, roll it onto the block using a hard paint-roller tool, and then carefully press the paper down onto the block. After the ink layer dries (2 to 7 days), I carefully repeat the process for each subsequent layer of colour.
Each print is unique and there will be slight variations within the edition – that’s part of the charm of linocut printmaking. You can see the hand of the artist in every print.
